About Me

I am an Associate Professor of Political Science at the Institute of Law, Politics and Development (DIRPOLIS) at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. My research focuses on the Middle East and North Africa with a particular emphasis on political elites and civil-military relations. I received my PhD from the European University Institute in Florence in 2013 and have held positions at King’s College London, the American University in Cairo, NATO Defense College in Rome, and Leiden University. I am the prinicipal investigator of the ERC-funded MENA-PERC project which examines the relationship between elite conflict and regime change in the MENA.

My research focuses on non-democratic politics, including authoritarian elites,  parties, and elections, as well as military coups.

If you are interested in military coups, check out (and download) the CAM dateset.

My fieldwork has mainly focused on the Middle East and North Africa, in particular on Egypt. I have also conducted field research in Kyrgyzstan, the Turkish-Syrian boarder area, Tunisia, and Yemen.
